Charcoal Grill Specialty Restaurant “Shiroganeya” 炭火焼専門食処 白銀屋

Japan has many unique and delicious foods. Sushi, ramen, tempura, udon, and soba are some of the most famous.
I would like to recommend the charcoal grill, a style of searing meat and fish in a style familiar in Japan, which is very tasty. The name of restaurant is “Shiroganeya”.

“Sumibiyaki” is a Japanese term that refers to a type of cuisine that involves grilling food over charcoal. The word “sumi” means charcoal, while “yaki” means grilled or roasted. Sumibiyaki typically involves grilling meats, seafood, and vegetables, often seasoned with soy sauce, salt, or other seasonings. The food is cooked over a charcoal fire, which gives it a distinct smoky flavor and charred texture. Sumibiyaki is a popular dining style in Japan.

Shiroganeya is a charcoal-grilled restaurant that focuses mainly on fish and serves freshly seared fish. Unlike the pan-frying style, the surface of the fish is browned and the inside is fluffy. It is also very healthy as it removes excess oil from the fish. If you don’t like sushi (raw fish), I urge you to try this char-grilled fish.

Shiroganeya is a typical “Izakaya” styled restaurant and I myself often go to this restaurant in Akasaka area but hardly ever see foreign tourists because as they do not have an English menu, it might be difficult for tourists to understand the menu.

One of the reasons I really want to introduce Shiroganeya to you is the lunch set meal is amazingly reasonable. If you were to eat sushi in Ginza, you would spend more than 15,000 yen (USD112.00) for a couple but at “Shiroganeya”, you should be able to enjoy lunch for less than 2,500 yen (USD19.00) for a couple and dinner for around 5,000 yen (USD38.00USD) even with some drinks.

Guidebooks for foreign tourists tend to introduce famous and expensive restaurants such as high-end Michelin-starred restaurants but if you are visiting to Tokyo (or you are already in Tokyo), you should also enjoy the great local lunch at “Shiroganeya”.

Shiroganeya offers different ordering styles for lunch and dinner. Lunch is mainly for local office workers, who enjoy a style of menu called “Teishoku” (Set menu of main grilled fish (or meat), rice, miso soup, and pickles). This can cost up to 1,200 yen (USD9.00) at the most.
For lunch at Shiroganeya in Akasaka, you order and pay ahead of time at the entrance. (Credit cards are not accepted for lunch, only by cash basically) You are then given a small plastic card. Leave the card on the desk, and your ordered meal will be brought to you. The style is sophisticated and streamlined.

On the other hand, for dinner, it is no different from other regular restaurants. you are led to the table, look at the menu, order, and can pay later by cash or credit card.
But I would recommend this restaurant to you for a lunch.

I know that the difficult part should be ordering the meal. The menu is probably in Japanese only. (You should first ask if they have an English menu. If there is, it is no problem at all.)
But don’t worry. The following is the main lunch menu of Shiroganeya.
